It’s that time of the week again when I bring you the Top 5 Wednesdays, created by gingerreadslainey. If you want to know how T5W works you can go to the Goodreads group by clicking here. This weeks theme is Top 5 Favorite Books Dealing with Mental Illness. I’ve read a few books dealing with mental illness but most of these books are about depression. After looking for a little bit in the books I’ve read I was able to find books not only about depression but also about other mental illness. So let’s start this list.
5. Silver Linings Playbook – Matthew Quick
If you haven’t read this book you probably watched the movie and know that the main characters suffer from mental illness and the male protagonist was even in a mental institution for quite a few time.
4. All the Bright Places – Jennifer Niven
This is a beautiful book where both the main characters deal with depression and suicidal thoughts. Not only that but Finch suffers from a sort of bipolar disorder. It’s a book that opens your open to depression.
3. Everything, Everything – Nicola Yoon
I’m not talking a lot of the book because it’s pretty recent but someone has a mental illness that really affects the book. This is an amazing book and if you haven’t read it you definitely should.
2. My Heart and Other Black Holes – Jasmine Warga
Another book in which both main characters deal with depression and suicidal thoughts. It’s one of the best books that I’ve read this year and the way that the author describes depression it’s really heart-breaking.
1. The Perks of Being a Wallflower – Stephen Chbosky
Is this a surprise? I’ve been very open about how much I love this books. It’s one of my favorite books ever and the way that it deals with Charlie’s mental illness is amazing and heart-breaking. For me this is a must read book and it had to be my number one pick for this week top.
These are some of my favorite books dealing with mental illness. What about you? Which books did you included in your top? Tell me in the comments.
I have read 3 out of 5 and the other two are on my TBR. I very much approve of this list 😉
When it comes to books about mental illnesses, I also always think of “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” by Ned Vizzini. Have you read that one?

I haven’t… I want to read it and I’ve been with the book so many times in my hands in the bookstore and for some reason I never buy it… But everyone says amazing things about it =)

I think the book is special because the author actually suffered from depression and unfortunately committed suicide a couple years back. It just makes the story so much more honest.

There’s also a movie adaptation of it. But I can’t remember if it was very faithful.

Great choices! Out of all of these I have only read Everything Everything but I plan to read most of these soon. The portrayal of mental illness in Everything Everything was well done and definitely hit close to my heart.

You should read the other ones. Some of them are favorites of mine… The mental illness in Everything, Everything was something that I wasn’t expecting but I agree that was well done =)
