It’s that time of the week again when I bring you the Top 5 Wednesdays, created by gingerreadslainey and hosted by Sam @ThoughtsOnTomes. If you want to know how T5W works you can go to the Goodreads group by clicking here. This week theme is Favorite Books Outside Your Comfort Zone. As you might know I mostly read new adult and young adult contemporary romances and sometimes I also read fantasy books but that’s it. However, sometimes I end up reading books with other genres and I love some of those books so today’s top will include some of those books. Here are my picks for this week:
You’re Never Weird on the Internet (Almost) by Felicia Day
I don’t normally read non-fiction but I love Felicia Day and I kept hearing about her book so I got the audiobook and loved it. This book was everything I was expecting and even more.
Seriously…I’m Kidding by Ellen DeGeneres
Another non-fiction book written by a funny lady. This one has a similar story to the one above. I love Ellen and I got the audiobook that I ended up loving. Both these audiobooks were super funny but both way out of my comfort zone.
Red Rising (Red Rising #1) by Pierce Brown
I know a lot of people love this book and that’s why I read it but it’s so out of my comfort zone. First of all, it’s science fiction and that’s not something that I read that often. Secondly, all the violence that this book had and all the trust issues I got after finishing it. So different from what I like but I loved this book anyway. I should really get around to read books 2 and 3.
Os Maias by Eça de Queirós
There are a lot of reasons why this book is out of my comfort zone… First, it was a required book on high school. I never liked the books I had to read in school until I read this one. Also, I don’t read books by portuguese authors. It’s bad, I know, but I didn’t like most of the books by portuguese authors that I’ve read so far. I still loved this book and this book was one of the reasons why I started reading more.
Animal Farm by George Orwell
I’ve read a lot of classics in the last few years but normally I read romance classics and Animal Farm is everything but a romance. I still really enjoyed this book (way more than 1984) and it’s an amazing book.
These are some Favorite Books Outside my Comfort Zone. What about you? What books would you include in your top? 😀
I’m glad you liked Red Rising despite it being a bit outside of your comfort zone. I need to read it soon! 🙂

You do. It’s so good

Animal farm always freaked me out. But my favorite book outside of my comfort zone is Heir to the Sun. It was a dark fantasy and I don’t really read those outside of Tolkien.

Never heard of that one. I might have to check it out

Someone just told me about “Seriously…I’m Kidding.” I’ve been thinking about getting it as an audiobook.

The audiobook is really cool because it’s told by Ellen. It’s super funny

That’s what she was referring to when she talked about it with me. I love when memoirs and essay collections are narrated by the author in their tone of voice. And Ellen…that’s got to be gold!

It is. What could we expect from Ellen, right?? XD

When Ellen puts her name on something we expect greatness. I mean she even had a hand in designing her HOME line for QVC! How man celebrities actually get their hands into designing their lines of home decor?

Yep. Ellen is awesome like that

I agree with you about Animal Farm – I enjoyed it a lot more than 1984 as well. Good list! 🙂

Right?? I did like 1984 but Animal Farm was so much better

Animal Farm was a good choice to read from the classic, and really there are classics for some reason so there is a good chance you will enjoy how amazing those books are.

Red Rising I’ve heard such good things about but the books are so big in that series that I
keep putting it off.

They are not that big but it’s pretty difficult to get into the first one because it’s such a different world. But it’s amazing

I also loved Felicia’s book and Will Wheaton’s memoir too. These are pretty much the only biographical books I liked.

I’m in the same NA/YA contemporary romance zone that you are. That Pierce Brown book would be on my list, too. 🙂

I love Ellen! She’s so funny. Seems like Nonfiction is outside of many comfort zones!

Most of people don’t like non-fiction for some reason. I’m one of those people but sometimes there are a few non-fiction books that I love

I actually haven’t read any Nonfiction books for fun. If I have, it was for school. People seem to love fiction more.

I think my favorite outside my comfort zone is The Color Purple. I usually don’t read books in dialects–but this book was absolutely beautiful. Glad to hear you liked Ellen’s audiobook; I can’t wait to check it out!

I’ve been meaning to read that one for a long time

Same with Red Rising. It was so violent and a lot more bloody that I’m normally used to in books but it turns out that I loved it!

YES. Completely agree 😀

I can see why Red Rising would be out of your comfort zone. I think it wasn’t exactly in mine either, but I do read more SciFi than you I think.

Yep. All the violence and deaths also help to be out of my comfort zone

Yeah … okay, the goriness wasn’t really my thing either.
