It’s that time of the week again when I bring you the Top 5 Wednesdays, created by gingerreadslainey. If you want to know how T5W works you can go to the Goodreads group by clicking here. As I might have noticed I skipped last week T5W mainly because the theme was favorite audiobooks and I’ve only listened to one audiobook. However I’m back and this week theme is Favorite Retellings. When I saw this week theme I was really happy because I love retellings. This was until the moment I tried to think retellings I’ve read and I couldn’t remember almost any retelling. It looks like I haven’t read that many retellings so this isn’t going to be a top 5, instead I’ll present you the top 4 retellings I’ve read.
4. Beastly by Alex Flinn
I didn’t remember that I’ve read this book until I started looking for retellings. I read this book when the movie was out and I did like it. If you ask me now I will not remember most of the things that happened but I did enjoy this book a few years ago.
3. Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas
Did you know that Throne of Glass is a Cinderella retelling?? I had no idea until I found this amazing blog post from Epic Reads (if you want to find more retellings to read check this post). I loved this book. I’ve only read the first two books because I’m not ready for what is coming and because I don’t want to wait another year for the next book but I absolutely adored the books I’ve read so far.
2. A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas
And we have another Sarah J. Maas book. Are you surprised? This book is a retelling of Beauty and the Beast and it’s just amazing. This was one of my favorite reads of the year so it makes sense that it appears in this list.
1. The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer
I think this is not a surprise for anyone. I love The Lunar Chronicles and will I haven’t read all the books (stupid copy of Winter that is still not here) I can tell you that this is one of my favorite series of all time. If you don’t know (which I doubt) these are retellings of Cinderella, Red Riding Hood, Rapunzel and Snow White. The most amazing thing about these books is how Marissa Meyer included some aspects from the original in each of her books.

What made me read Throne of Glass was a quote by Sarah J Maas saying (roughly) What if Cinderella had gone to the ball to kill the prince instead of dancing with him? 🙈

Winter is a retelling of Snow White? wow… I didn’t know that! From the title I kind of thought of Frozen for some reason (there’s a fairytale there, right?). Wow, I can’t even think how that will play out 😀

Yep, it’s Snow White but I can see why you thought it might be Frozen. Frozen us loosely based from a fairytale called The White Queen, I think

Actually I never thought about that. I don’t know if it will have the dwarfs. I know that Levana was jealous of Winter’s beauty and made her do something to her face. That’s similar to Snow White

from Book Depository. For some reason the book I ordered only got available last week or something like that instead of being available on the release day. They only shipped it in the end of last week

ok 😉 I got fairest today. I bought my brother and grandmother’s presents for me, so I obviously chose books that I wanted: Grisha trilogy, Illuminae (hardcover), A monster calls (HC), and I got advantage of the package and ordered Fairest too

I want Illuminae so much. I don’t know if I’m not going to order it after Christmas. I know that I’m going to order Carry On but I want to order a few others

yeah, my way of thought was something like: order books that you won’t buy for yourself because they’re more expensive. That’s how I ended up with 2 hardcovers, which I never buy for myself, but the Illuminae one is so gorgeous (I posted a pic on twitter…)

. The other day I told my dad I wanted the Harry Potter illustrated version for Christmas and once again he said it was too expensive. He’s always like that when I ask for books

=/ I get that. I only got to do this this year because I’m in charge of buying my grandmother and brother presents. They gave me an amount per person, so I chose what to do with their money

But that’s cool. If someone gives me books I actually ask for the portuguese editions so I know for sure that I’ll get the new Nicholas Sparks book and I might get Life and Death. I’m not sure but I don’t even know if I really want to read it

That’s the thing. The reviews for it are terrible and I already know what happens in the end. Do I really want that book? I don’t know

yep… and I have a few questions about it, like, ok, you genderbent so you can show that gender isn’t important for their roles, but isn’t it? the 4th book would never exist if Bella was a guy, because HE could never get pregnant…

In the last scene he almost dies (or actually dies, I’m not sure) and girl Edward (sory I don’t remember the name XD) turns him into a vampire

so yeah, basically, if the genders were reversed, girl Edward didn’t give a f***, and boy Bella gets to live how she wanted… sounds right, so no baby and no girl jacob

yeah, but his role was minimal… it wasn’t until Stephenie Meyer decided to do 4 books instead of 2 that he got a bigger role

=/ book 2 was such a pointless thing… I loved those books, but after I read so much this year, I’m starting to wonder why, because the story has so many problems…

Right? I loved the books to but last year I started thinking what if I re-read it now. I’m pretty sure I would hate it and get really frustrated.

I re-read them 3 years ago, and i still ok with it, but now, come to think of it, the ending of book 4 is kind of frustrating, all that pent up building, to… nothing? nothing happens! And Alice and Jasper disappear and everything… grrr, I actually think the movie solved that a little better than the book. And book 2 was so pointless…

it’s sad 😦 I’ll always love the series because it got me into reading, but it’s a poor example of what a good book should be

READ ALL THE BOOKS! ❤ These are all in my top list of retellings, though I would definitely add in Neverland by Shari Arnold. It's a Peter Pan retelling, and it is absolutely amazing : )
