It’s that time of the week again when I bring you the Top 5 Wednesdays, created by gingerreadslainey. If you want to know how T5W works you can go to the Goodreads group by clicking here. This weeks theme is Top 5 Least Favorite Tropes. So let’s start this list.
5. The “Chosen One”
It’s not that I hate the “Chosen One” trope. The problem is that is been used so much and some times in terrible ways that I’m tired of it. I’m not saying that I would not read more books that use the chosen one trope but can they be well written please?
4. Insecure Female Characters
I have a lot of problems with the “I’m so plain/ugly and she’s so beautiful” thing when they are beautiful and even when they aren’t as beautiful. Please just stop writing characters like these and give them some self-esteem.
3. Miscommunication
Please just talk. Really just talk. Miscommunication in books only brings unnecessary problems. Just make your characters talk so we don’t have to read stupid things.
2. Love Triangles
I know that I said before that I like some love triangles. That’s true but only when they are well written. Unfortunately most love triangles are not that well written and are unrealistic. Not only that but they are so overused so can authors stop doing this please?
1. Insta-Love
I think that this is a problem for a lot of people. Insta-love is so unrealistic. OK, you can see someone and say that you are attracted to that person but you will not say that you love him/her after 5 minutes. That doesn’t happen in real life in shouldn’t happen in books.
These are some of the my least favorite tropes. What about you? Which characters tropes did you included in your top? Tell me in the comments.
wow 🙂 very nice 😀

I agree with all your points so much!
Of course everything is dependent on the style of writing and can be fun/good if written in the right way, but especially the miscommunication is something I get really frustrated with. EVERYONE knows what’s going on and it could be solved so easily of the characters just talked. It’s so annoying.

I agree with you. It all depends on the writing style and miscommunication it’s terrible. It’s a lot of unecessary drama

Exactly! And often it feels so terribly forced, like every normal human being would have said something at that point.

Right? You know what is even worse? A book in a trilogy that is basically full of miscommunication. The last book from the Of Poseidon trilogy was terrible because the main characters didn’t talk about things. It was really bad especially because I loved the first two books

Ugh, that sucks! Since it’s the last part it makes it even worse. 😦

I try to forget that the last book exists. For me it’s a duology

Hahaha that’s one way to go about it!

Oh god I don’t know which one of numbers 1, 2 and 3 annoys me the most haha! Miscommunication was one of the biggest reasons I didn’t enjoy Isla and the Happily Ever After that much. There no problems, except that you won’t talk! But instalove ugh and love triangles (with exceptions though)… I especially hate love triangles that don’t add anything to the story

Unfortunately most of love triangles don’t add anything to the story. Can authors please stop trying to make love triangles a thing? And also insta-love?

I feel like most authors add a love triangle because they think that they’re popular and it’s what readers want. We do not, thank you very much!

I agree with you. But I think that I start to realizing that we don’t like it and we’re starting to see less books with love triangles =)

I sure hope so! 🙂

To me , most tropes depend on the story and writing like maybe an insecurity was a result of something that will be revealed at the end but if it’s completely irrelevant , it’s just a lazy option to seem relatable. That being said , insta-love is an absolute no go , I can’t even think of a time I liked it.

It depends a lot of how is written and if it’s important to the story. I actually can think a time I liked insta-love because it’s something I read last week. I usually don’t like it but in Everything,Everything I understood why the main character fell in love so fast. We are talking about someone who can’t live her own house and can’t socialize with anyone. That’s the only insta-love situation that I liked. Most of the times it’s stupid

Thank you for mentioning miscommunication! I hate when there’s like this one important thing that the main character doesn’t want to mention to their significant other because they’re afraid how he/she is going to react. IT’S GOING TO COME OUT ANYWAY SO JUST SAY IT!

Right? They are just doing the wrong thing and causing more problems than they would cause if they told the truth right from the beginning

I agree with all of them, I wished more authors could see that we are sick of those…

I hope that they start to actually see that we don’t like most of these things and they stop writing about it

I wouldn’t mind Love Triangles if they are better executed but not the annoying one’s where the girl had to choose between the new bad guy in town and her best friend.I hate all the remaining tropes they are so much overused. 😀

I understand you. I’m very picky with love triangles and only like a few because normally love triangles are are not well written

I agree! That’s why everyone is hating love triangles. 😀

Such good points! These are pretty much my biggest issues with books and they can completely ruin a good story for me. Well put. – ashley

Miscommunication… yes! That was my #1 pick. Such a pet peeve of mine. Just talk already! Ugh. Insta-love is showing up on a lot of lists today. I think we’re all sick of that one.

Nice picks! Miscommunication is my most hated trope ever! Even in like tv shows, it’s just so frustrating because you could just talk! Yeah, insecure females are #2 for me—come on girls, you don’t need a guy to tell you that you like nice 🙂

I agree with you. Most of the girls in books are beautiful but only start believing that when a hot guy starts noticing her… It’s stupid

Yeah. I hope that the girls that do read these type of books walk away with the message that they don’t need a guy to tell them they are beautiful. I guess that’s something good that might come out of these tropes 🙂
